Form Base code has been popular for the past decade. Many municipalities are switching from conventional zoning to form base code. Dick Farley talks about the pros and cons of Form Base code in this podcast interview.

Form Base code is oriented on workable communities and encourages transit. It considers existing infrastructure and so is not always appropriate to apply to existing areas. Form base code works the best in new development, where roads and size of the blocks are not set yet. This code is trying to illuminate design reviews or any kind of negotiations with designers. Overall, this new zoning code is more graphic and easier to use for designers. In the long run, even existing neighborhoods will benefit from this new code.

The new code will bring flexibility and, at same time, will have just as many conditions as conventional zoning codes.
